This Green and Sometimes Pleasant Land

Don’t get me wrong, living in rural Northumberland is a treat. The roads are generally quiet, the land is indeed “green and pleasant” and people generally seem to be much nicer in the countryside than in towns – maybe it’s reduced stress that does it – but you just can’t get away from the fact that the weather here has been rubbish for the last year. Here we are half way through August and I can’t remember the last time it was hot and sunny.

I’ve one of those pocket smartphones that tells you the weather and I tend to check up on my favourite locations pretty regularly. There can be no doubt that the Northeast has consistently poor weather compared to, say London and is only matched by Blackpool for persistant cloud and rain. Chicago (my wife Maureen is from over there) fares much better except in winter, the South of France (we have friends who have a place there) is a different world, but top of my list – is where our new summer home is – Spain! In the last 2 months I can count on one hand the number of times it’s rained and generally, temperatures have been a very pleasant 25-35 degrees C.

We’ve already started the journey to making a second home over there – and for those interested, I’ve put together a separate blog where I can detail the adventure, starting from an empty shell to the finished job. It’s over here if you’re into travel.
